Whiskymaking
Whiskymaking is a creative art.
Every Compass Box whisky takes shape in the hands of our whiskymakers, in our Whiskymaking Room in London.
We don't own a distillery. Instead, we source whiskies from over 40 distilleries across Scotland, choosing each one for the character and flavour it brings to our blends.
Our whiskymakers begin with deliciousness in mind. How do we deliver that to whisky lovers? In pursuit of flavour, we build from selecting the finest mature stocks but also create entirely custom casks, processes and new make spirit sourcing program to cultivate flavour in our own way. From here deliciousness is built by layering qualities from each component into an experience that is greater than the sum of its parts.
The Whiskymakers
Angela D'Orazio, Michael Stephenson and Samuel Travers are our whiskymakers. Each brings different talent, craftsmanship and experience. Together, they create whiskies none of them could deliver alone.
Choices made for flavour
Sourcing — Distillery Profiles: we select whiskies from across Scotland, each good enough to drink on its own, but extraordinary when combined.
Sourcing — Mature Stock & New Make: as whiskymakers we can source readily matured stock as well as spirit straight from the still, to control the full time of maturation, allowing for greater influence of the flavours we have available to blend with.
Casks: every cask type is chosen for the flavour it gives, from first-fill bourbon barrels to Oloroso sherry puncheons. We have multiple custom-built and custom-seasoned cask profiles developed with leading cooperages that give us unique flavour profiles to draw from.
Strength and character: we bottle at higher strengths, never add artificial colouring and never chill-filter, to protect the natural flavour of the whisky.
